T-Shirt as a Service – you are (still) ahead of your time
An Idea That Endures
When we launched the concept “T-Shirt as a Service,” it was much more than a new sales model for us – it was a bold step towards a true, tangible circular economy.
The initial interest was considerable – understandably so, because the idea of using rather than owning clothing is new and unfamiliar to many. And as is often the case with innovative approaches, there was enthusiasm alongside critical voices. Some questioned what this model had to do with sustainability – or what exactly the innovation entailed.
For us, precisely this dialogue was important. Because change begins where existing thought patterns are questioned and new perspectives are opened.
The basic idea is actually simple: Instead of buying a T-shirt, you only pay for its use. For a monthly fee, you receive a Supreme T-shirt, which you can then wear for as long as you like – and at the end, you simply return the used one to us. We take care of the rest: preparation, reuse, or recycling, depending on its condition.
A simple principle with great potential:
-
Less ownership, more utility
-
Better planning for production & resources
-
A closed textile loop where nothing is lost
Why we are currently pausing the subscription model
After an intensive test phase, we decided to put the model on hold for now. This decision was not easy for us – because the feedback was almost consistently positive, the interest was high, and the vision was clearly correct. At the same time, during the test phase, we also realized:
-
Technically, there are still too many hurdles to offer the service with the quality we demand ourselves and that one expects from Muntagnard.
-
Logistically, further developments are needed to efficiently and truly sustainably scale the model.
-
And culturally, the concept is still unfamiliar to many – to "use" a T-shirt instead of owning it requires a rethinking that takes time.
That's why we deliberately chose this step: Not because we doubt the idea, but because we want to give it the chance to come back really strong – at a later date, with even more maturity, experience, and power.
What remains – and what's next
Our ambition to transform the textile industry towards a true circular economy remains unbroken. Our passion for testing new ideas and treading bold paths lives on. And our Iceep service, of course, remains in place – so you can continue to easily return worn Muntagnard products for recycling and receive a voucher in return.
T-Shirt as a Service is not off the table. Quite the opposite: We see it as a valuable first test, a learning field, a cornerstone. We are working on this model behind the scenes with full conviction and curiosity – firmly believing that the right moment will come.
The idea of no longer owning clothing, but consciously using it, has great future potential in our eyes. And perhaps in a few years, we will look back and wonder how it was ever common to buy certain garments – instead of simply paying for their use.
What seems unusual today could be completely natural tomorrow. Real change sometimes requires not only courage but also patience. And we are ready to invest both.
