5 tips: washing clothes in an environmentally friendly way

How do you get the need for clean clothes better with the environment when washing? And at the same time your clothes protrudes? With these environmentally friendly 5 tips.

We Swiss women wash an average of around 300 kg - per capita and year. That makes around 220 washes. With 40 to 70 liters of water per drum, there is quite a bit. And this only applies to newer washing machines, with older ones it is up to 180 liters per laundry. Although washing the laundry in the average household “just” 12% of the water consumption, there is a sparse potential with a few slight tricks. Because it is not only necessary to contain water consumption, but also the power consumption and the loads for wastewater.

1st tip: the lower the washing temperature, the better

A widespread washing recommendation is: wash normally dirty clothing at 40 degrees, heavily dirty at 60 degrees. But With slightly and normally dirty laundry, 20-30 degrees are sufficient, 60-degree linen can be washed at 40 degrees. At these temperatures, detergents already develop their full washing force. If you only wash at 60 degrees instead of 60, you save about 2/3 electricity per laundry.

Speaking of: at our Legna T-shirts made of wood fibers We originally communicated 40 degrees as a nursing instrument. We will adapt this to 30 degrees for the next generation.

2nd tip: Select sustainable detergent

In the case of detergents, it should only be used on products that are free of microplastics and easily biodegradable and can be found in a recycled packaging. The washing strips of our friends from the Swiss startup bluu corresponds to all of these criteria. The racetracks from Bluu offer many advantages: more space at home, no drag, no sticky containers or annoying powder on the floor. You can do it super easily: 1 strip for 1 washing load. Such washing strips are super practical for white, dark or colorful laundry of 15 - 95 degrees.

We from the Munagnard team are already enthusiastic. And the carpet strips not only convince us from a sustainability perspective: the variant "Alpine freshness" even reminds us of our beloved Bündner mountains when washing the laundry. Uh Koga Guat!

3rd tip: let off the tumbler

Air drying is always the better choice! The disposal of the dryer is probably the most important decision when it comes to reducing electricity consumption and keeping clothing in good shape.

4. Tip: less is more

Washing the clothes after each use is often a question of habit than hygiene. Less washing slows down the fading of the colors and the "aging" of clothing. Many items of clothing just have to be well ventilated and shaken out in order to be portable again. And many spots can be treated with a stain treatment. This is not unsanitary, but relieves both the laundry basket and a wallet. Pro tip: When washed, then turn the laundry from the inside to the outside. So they stay beautiful for longer.

5. Tip: Place on plastic -free clothing

In the case of clothing that contains polyester - i.e. plastic - there is microplastics into the water with every wash, which is environmentally stressful for water and floors. Therefore: when buying clothes on natural fabrics such as cotton, wood fiber or wool.

Did you know that many brands rely on a bio -based main material such as cotton, but not with the sewing thread and washing label? Nowadays it is unfortunately the norm that is used on polyester. That is why we rely on the same, bio -based material with the entire piece of clothing (fabric, label, sewing thread). Our T-shirt Legna was even the 1st certified plastic -free garment in the world according to flustix.com. A sewing thread or washing label made of polyester does not lead to considerable microplastic pollution, but it is a hindrance for recycling/recycling of the products.
